EMPTY HIGHWAY

Lyrics by Andre Smith

“Empty Highway” is a reflective country song about a young man who knows what he wants his life to become but hasn’t yet figured out how to get there. Written by Andre Smith in 1998, the song places its narrator beside an empty highway, caught somewhere between where he has been and the future he can already see in his mind.

That future is remarkably simple: a loving wife, two barefooted children, and a place he can finally call home. The dream is clear. The road leading to it isn’t.

For Andre, that uncertainty came from personal experience. Growing up Indian within a predominantly white society, he often struggled with where he fit and what direction his own life was supposed to take. That feeling of searching for a place to belong became part of the inspiration behind “Empty Highway.” Rather than directly telling that story, Andre turned those emotions into the image of a young man traveling from place to place, trying to find the life he believes is waiting somewhere ahead.

The empty highway becomes more than a road. It represents possibility, uncertainty, loneliness, and hope all at once. The young man has been in and out of love, has dreamed about the same destination countless times, and continues moving toward something he cannot quite reach. Yet he never gives up believing it exists.

By the final verse, he is riding in the back of a dirty old truck, still traveling that highway. But something has changed. This time, he believes he is heading toward the place he has seen in his dreams — a place he won't have to leave when morning comes.

At its heart, “Empty Highway” is a song about belonging. It captures that period in life when you may not know exactly where you're going, but you already know what you hope to find when you get there. For Andre Smith, that search was deeply personal. For anyone who has ever wondered where they fit or whether the life they imagine is somewhere down the road, the story is universal.
